Part of my Sarasota Strong series, dedicated to the optimism, resilience, and beauty of our community in the face of hurricane season 2024. These paintings highlight one of the most beautiful views in Sarasota, the gold dome beside the Ringling bride, the bay, boats, and sea grapes just beginning to ripe.
I started this series with abstract under paintings after Hurricane Debby, and began the next layers of placing outlines of beautiful views of the Ringling Bridge as Hurricane Helene swiped us. As many of you know, we didn’t realize how bad that one would be and I was unknowingly painting as the first bands of it rolled in 24 hours ahead of the worst of it. Those first bands were bad enough that I cut the painting short and did evacuate to a hotel on the mainland for safety. I’m so glad I did as our siesta key home flooded 4-6 feet. Just as were we’re getting cleaned up from that storm, a week later hurricane Milton hit us head on. I evacuated with these painting ahead of time, and after 6 weeks of cleaning and repairing our home, once again began painting on them. This time I had a newfound sense of appreciation for our community and for sunshine and the ability to be sitting in my Siesta Key studio and paint. I was determined to finish a whole series inspired by Sarasota and her surrounding barrier islands, and for each one to be absolutely beautiful and work I could be proud to put out that matched the gorgeous views and joy of our community.
