"Sarasota Girls" Artist Statement:
Bertha Palmer, Mable Ringling, Marie Selby, and Eugenie Clark are the 4 Sarasota legends honored in this painting. These adventurous females made this city what it is today, left behind conventional female roles in society to do it, and took a big risk moving here when it was still just a fishing village. I wanted to show them trading in their heels and tiaras for saltwater life, representing all they left behind from their previous lifestyles.
They pushed the limits of what a woman was thought to be capable of in not only their time, but by modern day standards as well. They made massive contributions to the fields of botany, marine science, business, ranching, women's rights, and the arts. They were smart, brave, generous; their empowering message still inspires women today. They cast a long and beautiful shadow over our city and state both literally and figuratively; it leaves me wondering: what limits can we push here in Sarasota next?
