“The Matriarchs”

Commissioned exclusively for The St. Regis Longboat Key Resort, this painting celebrates seven visionary women—trailblazers in luxury, philanthropy, arts, and innovation—whose names grace the resort’s seven suites. Created to honor their generous legacies in shaping Sarasota’s cultural heart, the work reflects the resort’s commitment to local giving. Caroline Astor, Irene Colson, Mable Ringling, Marie Selby, Lora Whitney, Eugenie Clark, & Katherine Klauber.

Unveiled at their recent Sarasota philanthropic conference, now on display as part of their permanent collection.

Caroline Astor: As the founder of the St. Regis brand’s legacy of opulent hospitality, she epitomized exquisite taste, hosting legendary Gilded Age balls chronicled in her famed “black book”—which she holds here. Every St. Regis resort honors her with a namesake suite.

Irene Colson: A pioneering midwife and community leader in early 20th-century Sarasota, she delivered countless babies while championing equality; she founded the city’s first church & hotel for African Americans, fostering resilience in the Newtown (now Rosemary District) neighborhood.

Mable Ringling: She poured her passion into elevating Sarasota as an arts epicenter, curating world-class collections that now form the core of the Ringling Museum of Art. Her legacy blooms eternally in the museum’s gardens & galleries, inviting all to savor Sarasota’s creative soul & circus legacy.

Marie Selby: Founder of our Botanical Gardens, depicted fishing pole & orchids—conquered the outdoors as Sarasota’s premier sportswoman, racing powerboats & becoming the first woman to drive across the U.S. in 1928. Selby’s bold explorations remind us that true luxury lies in the wild rhythms of land & sea.

Lora Whitney: Devoted artist who settled N. Longboat Key during the Great Depression. Shown painting with a WWII Red Cross armband, she transformed their resort into a healing retreat for soldiers. Her brushstrokes and benevolence wove art into the fabric of community, proving creativity’s power to mend & inspire.

Eugenie Clark: Marine biology pioneer “Genie” revolutionized ocean science through fearless dives and inventions. The Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota was established in 1955 for her groundbreaking shark research, which debunked myths & advanced conservation. With 26 world diving records and 170+ publications, her curiosity turned fear into fascination, safeguarding marine life for future explorers.

Katherine Klauber: She returned to her family-owned Colony Beach & Tennis Resort—today’s St. Regis site—and elevated it into a global legend of hospitality and sport. She expanded its pioneering tennis programs, drawing champions from every continent. Her stewardship blended family tradition with innovation, serving elegance with a side of athletic ambition that echoes in every court and cocktail.

8x10 and 5x7 prints come with a beautiful keepsake card that shares each woman's story. If you ordered larger and want the story card as well, just let me know.

This is a fine art giclee print on archival watercolor textured paper, perfect for Lauren’s expressive paint style.  All Lauren Marshall Art Prints are produced in the USA at a specialty printing studio, which provides superior fine art printing, widely known as giclee printing. Giclee printing is the highest quality, archival inkjet printing used to create digital reproductions of paintings.

Because of its high quality and relative rarity, a limited edition giclee is valuable from its initial printing. But these giclee prints also become more valuable over time as the artist gains more and more recognition and the edition of the print sells out.
